'Deep Throat' porn star Harry Reems dead at 65

Adult film star, Harry Reems, perhaps most famous for starring opposite Linda Lovelace in the 1972 groundbreaking porn film "Deep Throat," is dead at age 65, Reuters reported on March 21.

Reems’ wife Jeanne said that her husband had been battling a variety of health problems, including pancreatic cancer, and died at the veteran’s hospital on Tuesday, March 19 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

"Deep Throat" was the first porn film widely shown in theatres and made an estimated $600 million at the box office -- although Reems claimed he only received $800 for his role.

"Deep Throat" also cascaded into a call to arms in the birth of obscenity legal rulings to sweep across the U.S. in the 1970s. As a result, Harry Reems was sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted in 1976 for his part in the film.

That conviction was overturned; but the stress of the trial and the threat of a prison sentence sent Reems spiraling downward into a life of alcoholism and drug abuse.

Reems bottomed out by the mid-1980s. He was drinking more than ever, homeless and bankrupt.

By 1989 he managed to turn his life around. He got clean, converted to Christianity, and married Jeanne.

Harry Reems and his wife moved to Utah where Harry got a real estate license.

"I'm happier today than ever. I saved my own life. I'm content with the way I conduct myself with my marriage, my home, my business," said Reems.

"I live in a small town where everybody knows everybody and nobody thinks of me as a porn actor."

Reems appeared in approximately 140 feature-length sexploitation and hardcore films between 1971 and 1989, with “Deep Throat” (1972) and “The Devil in Miss Jones” (1973) being the best known.

Linda Lovelace, who co-starred with Reems in “Deep Throat,” died on April 22, 2002 from injuries sustained in a car accident. Lovelace was 53 when she died.
