Dead pigs in Shanghai river: now 6K

River supplies city 22% of its water

Dead pigs have been found floating in the water in Shanghai in China. And the problem is getting worse when it comes to that dead pig situation.

That's because the number has increased from 900 dead pigs to an astounding 5,913, reports the AFP.

Several officials involved in the incident have been assuring the public that the water supply is "generally stable."

San Francisco resident, Katie Adler, however, doesn't believe it. She says "I know I wouldn't feel happy drinking that water. I would be drinking only bottled water."

What's worrying is that the river where the dead pigs have been turning up supplies the city with around 22 percent of its water, says Newser.com

One sarcastic comment that appeared online said: "Nearly 6,000 dead pigs and the water quality is still stable? That really is a miracle," writes Newser.com

The news site reports that another quip being made by local residents is that the pigs have committed suicide in order to escape China's bad air.

It's suspected that the dead pigs are coming from a large hog center based in the adjoining province, though nothing has yet been proven.

The hog center--Jiaxing--is saying the increase in the number of dead pigs is simply due to the cold weather the country has been having, says the Washington Post
