In 2011 the female ensemble comedy “Bridesmaids” dominated the box office and eventually even forced its way into award season. One of the reasons for that success was supporting star Melissa McCarthy, who today returns to theaters along with Jason Bateman in Universal's “Identity Thief.” However while “Bridesmaids” was a critical darling, today’s reviews for “Thief” aren’t exactly arresting.
“Identify Thief” centers on Sandy Patterson (“Arrested Development’s” Jason Bateman), a mild mannered Denver account rep who finds his world spinning out of control when his identity is swiped by a Florida con artist played by McCarthy. Unwilling to sit by and let a criminal profit off of him he sets out to reclaim his name and apprehend the impersonator. Yet, according to a few of the critics Patterson’s journey is just as rocky for audiences as it is for him.
“‘Identity Thief’' strands these two ordinarily enjoyable comics in the middle of nowhere with no help for miles.” Christy Lemire, Associated Press
“‘Identity Thief' tries its best to entertain but half way through it loses its appeal and you'll be ready for the criminal chase to end.” Jolene Mendez, Entertainment Spectrum
You can read the top 5 best quotes from today’s reviews by clicking above or below this article, but very few of them get any better. Still, today’s early estimates, put the film on track for at least a $20 million opening, yet Deadline is now reporting theater chain AMC is expected to shut down Cineplex’s across the northeast as a result of snowstorm Nemo, which could put a big dent in the film’s box office gross.
Regardless of the negative reviews though, “Thief” is one of those films not made for critics and designed to lure audiences into theaters who are looking for a non-thinking movie starring two massively talented comedians. In fact it’s the perfect film to see on a cold snow February night…granted of course you actually can get to the theater.
