Cops: 5 Long Islanders face drug, weapons charges

Five people from Long Island were arrested Wednesday by state police on felony weapons charges after a traffic stop in Deer Park, authorities said Jan. 16.

Troopers arrested Donte McLeod, 19, of Melville; Robert Jones, 19, of Deer Park; Ronald Kibler, 22, of Deer Park; Shannon Kalish, 18, of Melville; and Joseph Benedetto, 21, of Deer Park, on charges of second-degree and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Members of the State Police Narcotic Enforcement Unit were investing along Deer Park Avenue near Grand Avenue around 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday, when they reportedly saw a Jeep pull into a parking lot and meet a gathering of people.

Investigators believed the group engaged in a drug deal and followed the Jeep along Grand Avenue, until initialing a traffic stop near 10th Avenue. On the floor of the car, police allegedly found a “defaced” and loaded .38 caliber revolver.

All five people inside the vehicle were arrested at the scene and held in police custody.

In a news release, police said Kalish and Jones were additionally charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance for allegedly illegally possessing Xanax.

The five were due to appear Thursday at First District Court in Central Islip.
