Cooking with kids: “moo-vin” milk shakes

See also

Cooking with kids includes teaching them how to make liquid treats. After the initial time, you may want to consider letting them make them on their own, depending on the ages of your children and the difficulty of the recipe.

A variety of recipes that would fit both considerations would be those listed below that are better known as moo-vin milk shakes. Each of these shakes are made with the same directions even though their ingredients vary just a bit.

Ingredients:

Chocolate Shake

  • 1 pint low-fat sugar-free chocolate ice cream
  • ½ cup fat-free (skim) milk
  • 1 Tablespoon chocolate syrup
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla
  • ⅛ teaspoon decorator sprinkles

Vanilla Shake

  • 1 pint low-fat sugar-free vanilla ice cream
  • ½ cup fat-free (skim) milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • ⅛ teaspoon decorator sprinkles

Strawberry Shake

  • 1 pint low-fat sugar-free vanilla ice cream
  • 1 cup frozen unsweetened strawberries, thawed
  • ¼ cup fat-free (skim) milk
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla

Directions:

  1. For any flavor shake, combine all ingredients except decorator sprinkles in blender container. Cover and blend until smooth.
  2. Pour into 2 small glasses.
  3. Add decorator sprinkles, if desired.
  4. Serve immediately

Just because strawberry season is just around the corner, do not be tempted to use fresh strawberries in this recipe. They will not provide the right texture and the strong strawberry flavor that you will get from the frozen ones. Trust me on this one.

Two small shakes

This recipe will result in two small shakes. If that is not going to be enough for your family, you can double or triple the recipe, as needed. When doing so, remember to teach your children how to do that. This would create a "tasty" real-life experience for them.

One of the things you want to be certain to tell your children about using blenders is to ALWAYS put the top on securely before hitting the blend (or any other) button. Otherwise, the walls, ceiling and floor will be enjoying their shakes.

Mango shake

You can make a shake with just about any kind of fruit as well as with many vegetables. Do not assume, however, that you can just substitute one fruit for another and keep the rest of the ingredients the same. That will not work in many cases.

vanilla shake

Believe it or not, if given the choice, more people select vanilla over chocolate ice cream. I know- it's almost un-American, isn't it? Maybe it's because they can get chocolate in so many other forms. Either way, I like them both.
