Our country will celebrate the 16th Read Across America Day on March 1. This day also coincides with the birthday of one of our beloved children's author, Dr. Seuss. Seuss books are classics in children's literature, and these books offer countless hours of reading fun. There are many activities that young children can participate in to expand their love for the characters in the books by Dr. Seuss.
You can prepare your child to participate in Read Across America by challenging your child to visit the library to check out favorite Seuss books. You might prepare small cards with pictures of favorite Seuss characters to take with you to the library. Have your child use these clue cards to have a scavenger hunt for each book on the library shelf. The children's librarian at Gulf Gate Library in Sarasota is extremely helpful in helping to locate favorite books. The Gulf Gate Library is proud to announce its re-opening at its temporary new location at the Westfield Sarasota Square Mall next to the J.C. Penney store. The library will be located here until 2014 while its new library is being constructed at the old location. Visit the library with your child on Read Across America Day to find your favorite Dr. Seuss books.
Your child might also like to make drawings of favorite Seuss characters to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss.
A third activity that your child will enjoy is cooking with a favorite Seuss book. The classic "Green Eggs and Ham" offers the opportunity to read this beloved book and then to prepare a recipe to extend the reading experience. Your child will enjoy adding green good coloring and tiny pieces of ham to scrambled eggs as a celebration breakfast dish.
All of these activities will make this year's celebration of Read Across America Day and the birthday of Dr. Seuss' birthday exciting for children, and help to accomplish the goal of making reading an inviting activity to be participated in every day.
