Competition in the air as students in St. Lucie County schools achieve victories

   Students in Susie Lewis’ classroom at Lawnwood Elementary School recently learned they had earned second prize in the Lysol Healthy Habits Story writing contest sponsored by Scholastic Parent and Child magazine. For the students’ “incredible effort, concept and execution”, the school is being awarded $5,000 and a set of 25 books for Ms. Lewis’ classroom. As the #1 Pediatrician-recommend brand and trusted champion of health for over a 100 years, LYSOL® Brand is committed to fighting germs in the classroom so that children can learn and thrive in school. LYSOL® is now in its fourth year of providing schools with extensive resources that are designed to educate students on healthy habits and teach ways to minimize contact with illness causing germs.  REF:  Lucie Links Newsletter (SLCSD) Feb. 2013  Port Saint Lucie High School’s JROTC took first place in four out of five events, and placed second in the fifth, at the recent annual Treasure Coast Drill Meet hosted at their school. Participating were Okeechobee High, Fort Pierce Westwood High, Treasure Coast High, Fort Pierce Central High, and Port Saint Lucie High schools. The competition consisted of five events: Male Unarmed Squad, Female Unarmed Squad, Male Color Guard, Female Color Guard, and Mixed Unarmed Platoon. The Jaguar battalion took first place in each event except for the Female Color Guard, in which they placed second.Vision of JROTC :Providing a quality citizenship, character, and leadership development program, while fostering partnerships with communities and educational institutions.Why Join Army Junior ROTC:To appreciate the ethical values and principles that underlies good citizenship.To develop leadership potential, while living and working cooperatively with others.To be able to think logically and to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing.To appreciate the importance of physical fitness in maintaining good health.To understand the importance of high school graduation for a successful future, and learn about college and other advanced educational and employment opportunities.To develop mental management abilities.To become familiar with military history as it relates to America's culture, and understand the history, purpose, and structure of military services.To develop the skills necessary to work effectively as a member of a team.  REF:  Lucie Links Newsletter (SLCSD) Feb. 2013   Four Port St. Lucie High School medical academy students in the Health Occupations Students of America organization placed in regional competition and have advanced to state competition to be held April 4-7 in Orlando.  Sarah Diebold, second place in Extemporaneous Speaking, Emily Sellas, third place in Prepared Speaking, and Tanesa Dowlat, fifth place in Pharmacology, Jennifer Donnelly, third place in Epidemology.HOSA provides a unique program of leadership development, motivation, and recognition exclusively for middle school, secondary, postsecondary, adult and collegiate students.  HOSA is 100% health care! HOSA is not a club to which a few students in school join.  Rather, HOSA is a powerful instructional tool that works best when it is integrated into the Health Science curriculum and classroom.  Health Science instructors are committed to the development of the total person. Those who join the Health Science – HOSA Partnership recognize the importance of providing students with training far beyond the basic technical skills needed for entry into the health care field.  The rapidly changing health care system needs dedicated workers who, in addition to their technical skills, are people-oriented and capable of playing a leadership role as a member of a health care team.  REF:  Lucie Links Newsletter (SLCSD) Feb. 2013View the list »

Competition is a tool that helps schools and subject areas to obtain goals as well as individual successes. Students from elementary to high school levels In St. Lucie schools are experiencing tremendous achievements as they participate in competing events along the Treasure Coast, district, regional and a variety of state competitions.

Progress can be measured by the amount of effort exerted mentally and physically to reach goals and be challenged to unlimited success. Competition in schools allows students as teams or individuals to step out and test their capabilities amongst peers. School based competition whether local, district, regional or state elevates a healthy rivalry which encourages teams and individuals to plan strategies, prepare and work together with a united goal in mind. This is the frame work for living and progressing in our society as participating citizens.
