Cinco De Mayo will be celebrated on May 5, and fun read-alouds are always a great way to introduce special holidays to children. Picture books can introduce children to customs, ways of celebrating a holiday, and special items that are associated with the holiday. Many teachers and childcare workers will celebrate this holiday with the children in their classrooms as a fun addition to multicultural education.

Schaffer is a great choice in that it supports the standards for social studies in school curriculum.  Colorful illustrations and text describe the holiday and ways of celebrating.  Photos are coordinated with the text for easy reading.  The repetition of words suppports vocabulary development for young readers.  The large print is appealing to young readers.  A list of internet sites for discovering facts about Cinco de Mayo is a great addition to this book.  This book was published by Capstone Press, and is recommended for ages 4-8.  It has an ISBN of 9780736806619.

"Cinco de Mayo" by Anne Heinrichs and illustrated by Kathleen Petelinsek is a great choice with its interesting facts, songs, and poems that celebrate the holiday  Fiestas, floats, and costumes are all a part of the colorful illustrations that feature the colors of dark brown, dark red, blue and green that are all traditional colors that represent the Mexican culture.  This book is recommended for ages 7-9 and was published by Child's World Incorporated.  It has an ISBN of 9781623235055.
