While chimney inspections are not a DIY job, homeowners should be aware of what a professional chimney sweep looks for during an inspection of the chimney system. In order to to a thorough and complete inspection the Midwest Chimney Safety Council recommends that evaluations of chimneys be completed by a professional CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep and that a Level II inspection be completed using an internal chimney camera.
A professional chimney inspector will perform a Level II inspection per NFPA 211 Standards, which includes all accessible areas of the chimney including the fireplace, outer hearth, flue, smoke chamber, damper, exterior masonry chimney chase, flashing, crown, cover, cricket, and clearances to combustibles. In manufactured chimneys the inspection should include the wood chase, exterior finish, metal chase top, metal chimney pipe and components, fireplace, outer hearth, cricket, flashing, and clearances to combustibles.
