Families will celebrate Grandparents Day on September 8 this year. Grandparents are a large part of families now with baby boomers being the Sandwich Generation who care for children at home and aging parents. Grandparents also serve as caregivers for grandchildren and are sometimes raising their grandchildren in their home. Grandparents are special to many families.
Marian McQuade started a campaign in 1970 to have a day to honor grandparents. President Carter signed a federal proclamation in 1978 to establish Grandparents Day to be celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day.
Families can celebrate this special day in many ways. A great website for ideas to honor grandparents is www.pennypinchinmom.com. Ideas for gifts and activities can be found at this site. Picture frames made from popsicle sticks is one creative activity that can be done together to put a cherished photo in as a gift for grandparents. Telling stories, interviewing grandparents, and making picture postcards of family activities that have included grandparents are just a few activities for this day.
Sarasota is fortunate to have many activities that will be a great way to celebrate Grandparents Day. Check out the Ticket Magazine in the Thursday edition of the HeraldTribune. This is a great source for upcoming activities to celebrate this special day.
Books make great gifts for grandparents. The books in the List are just a few selections that all grandparents will cherish for years to come. Two of the books are selections of anecdotes about being grandparents. One of the chosen selections can be used as a journal for family stories about grandparents.
Happy Grandparents Day!
