Cheddar cheese winners at the American Cheese Society 2013 conference

Each year, the American Cheese Society presents a conference for cheese makers, retailers, suppliers, and cheese fanatics that showcases some of the very best in cheese making from the Americas. The highlight of the show is a competition which cheese producers vying for one of three places in over one hundred categories. The culmination of the competition is the annual Festival of Cheese which offers almost all of the entries up for tasting by attendees and the general public. This year, there were almost 1,800 entries in the categories, with 1,597 of them making it to the tables in the tasting ballroom.

Cheddar is one of the most popular cheeses in the U.S., and one of the more popular tasting sections at the festival. Herein are most of the winners across the cheddar category, which included:

  • Aged ceddar, aged over 12 and up to 24 months, all milks
  • Cheddar, aged up to 12 months, made from cow's milk
  • Cheddar, aged up to 12 months, made from goat, sheep, buffalo, or mixed milk
  • Mature cheddar, aged over 24 and up to 48 months, all milks
  • Mature cheddar, aged over 48 months, all milks
  • Cheddar wrapped in cloth, linen, aged up to 12 months, all milks
  • Cheddar wrapped in cloth, linen, aged over 12 months, all milks

Not pictured are:

  • The Artisan Cheese Exchange, Wisconsin, Deer Creek Reserve, which won 3rd place in the Mature cheddar, aged over 24 and up to 48 months, all milks cagetory.
  • Grafton Village Cheese, Vermont, Vermont Clothbound Cheddar, which won 2nd place in the Cheddar wrapped in cloth, linen, aged up to 12 months, all milks category
  • Bleu Mont Dairy, Wisconsin, Reserve Bandaged Cheddar, 22 month, which won 3rd place in the cheddar wrapped in cloth, linen, aged over 12 months, all milks category.
