Everyone is familiar with Charlotte Brontë's classic Gothic novel Jane Eyre. Many readers count it among their favorite novels of all time. Jane Eyre will likely continue to be Brontë's legacy. She penned several other novels both finished and unfinished during her short lifetime. Like Jane Eyre, some of her other books such as Villette were thought to be loosely based on her own experiences as a young teacher and governess. Brontë seemed to repeatedly write about or at least find inspiration in the memory of one doomed love affair.
Villette may be a book that is not generally known outside of Brontë enthusiasts however, some of her novels are even more obscure, remaining unpublished for many years. One work, a manuscript she was writing toward the end of her life, titled Emma was completed by other authors and published in recent years.
The following is a list of Charlotte Brontë's lesser known works.
