This week's box office was rejuvenated by, of all things, an animated film. Studios, and viewers alike, were hoping the mass appeal of animated films reached its zenith with a myriad of releases during the summer season. Some of the summer's latter animated films did poorly. Studios were cranking out the genre in rapid fire and frankly, most were not of strong caliber.
But, after weeks of anemic film releases, "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2" burst onto screens capturing $34 million in take to help it secure the number one slot. Many other films, high on the critics' list of must-see endeavors, opened to mediocre ticket sales.
Here, once again, my irreverent look at the past week's box office returns.
