Poor in this verse means beggar or crouch. It signifies that a person distressed in spirit over sin and the wrong in the world. Sin is characterized by destruction, disease, and other destroying factors. God is gracious and sent His only Son, Jesus to wash the sin problem away. Jesus’ blood cleans away sin and its’ affect. A believer in Christ Jesus can ask God for forgiveness of sin. He promises to forgive and make a person clean from it.
This forgiveness makes one blessed. He or she is called blessed or happy. “Blessed” also means “fortunate, well off” in the Strong’s Concordance. Jesus is teaching His disciples about true happiness. One takes on the form of a beggar and in humility approaches God.
The results are that the kingdom of heaven belongs to such. God’s throne is in heaven. One day all believers will live with God forever!
Challenge: Remember, you are blessed!
