Also in the Top 10 singles for the year were Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines”, featuring T.I. and Pharrell Williams, Justin Timberlake’s “Mirror” from Billboard’s top album of the year, “The 20/20 Experience”, Katy Perry’s “Roar” and another Macklemore-Lewis collaboration, “Can’t Hold Us”.

Released August 2012, “Thrift Shop”, a song showcasing Macklemore’s shopping preference towards thrift shops as opposed to high-end designer clothing, started slowly on the Billboard Hot 100 before reaching number one in February. Eventually, the song made Macklemore an international star, staying at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks and is just one of six songs in Billboard chart history to reach 7X Platinum status.

According to Billboard, the breakthrough single marked the first time since 1975 that a duo claimed top song of the year honors. The previous number one of the year featuring a duo was Captain and Tenille for Neil Sedaka’s “Love Will Keep Us Together”. To date, “Thrift Shop” has nearly 475 million views on You Tube, making it one of the year’s most watched videos.

Enjoying similar success was “Blurred Lines”, the Robin Thicke hit single that took the country by storm over the summer and stayed at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for an astounding 12 weeks. “Blurred Lines”, with its catchy beat, uber cool factor and sexy You Tube video, was the best selling song of the year, selling more than 6.3 million copies, compared to “Thrift Shop”, which currently stands at six million. Although some music critics have called “Blurred Lines” one of the worst songs of the year, there is no doubt millions of others felt differently.

One single curiously missing from this year’s Billboard’s Top 10 was “Royals” by New Zealand teenager Lorde, who’s up for four Grammy Awards next month, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year and was Song of the Year on iTunes. “Royals” came in at number 15 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for 2013.
