Public school students returned to school today throughout the state of Virginia. Millions of those students will be dependent upon school buses – or the cheese, as some students refer to them – as their means of transportation from home to school and back again.
This will be the first in a series of articles regarding bus safety. While any bus accident is one too many, it is amazing how few accidents there are involving school buses when you consider the millions of miles they travel every day.
As a school administrator, I had the dubious honor of responding to bus accidents. It is quite a sobering site to arrive at the scene of a bus accident just after police and rescue personnel have emptied the bus and have some of the students lying on blankets on ditch banks. Although that was an extreme case, it is a sight that never leaves one’s mind.
This series of articles is designed to assist parents in teaching children about bus safety. This first list is based upon what students should do when waiting for the bus at the bus stop. A special thanks to Suffolk Public Schools for sharing The Student’s Code of Conduct for the School Bus.
