Five Midwest designers presented their Avant Garde collections at Omaha Fashion Week in the Capital District of downtown Omaha Tuesday night. The preshow included models in the bar and lounge area on platforms wearing some cool designs.
The first designer in this summer evening show was Jenny Pool, a costume designer from Omaha. Pool took the idea of anything that hinders us and how we can set ourselves free. The single dress standing for one person caged at the beginning of her display and completely un-caged by the end.
Kristen Vanhessche was up second with her inspiration of nature, flowers, color, and different silhouettes for the body. While the designs were not over the top Avant Garde many of the pieces drew "wows" and "that is really cool" from the crowd.
Sabrina Jones offered many levels of wearable items which included some fan favorites. The colors were very vibrant and the styling the most Avant Garde aspect. Ms. Jones collection was well favored by the crowd with many attendees expressing a desire to own multiple pieces. Her inspiration was costume designer Colleen Atwood whose style typically includes large billowing multi-level skirts.
Tiffany Headley stole the show with her truly Avant Garde, over the top offering. Headley's inspiration was the raven. Her pieces spoke for themselves and were dark, mysterious, and interesting. Some pieces were quite risque, lingerie, and well-favored by the men in the crowd.
Rounding out the show was Angela Balderston, an Omaha designer originally from the United Kingdom. Her collection, Get Plastered, was pieces made of plaster and alien inspired. Each piece had an open back for the models to be able to get into them. The models wore nude leggings leaving the focus completely to the bodice created by Balderston. The most awe inspiring piece was a bikini style where Ms. Balderston perfectly matched the bodice to the skin color of the model. It was stunning and caused a pleasant outburst from the crowd.
The showing from all the designers was excellent and left Omaha wanting more.
