Arts fairs take over Manhattan this week

Scope Art FairDates: March 6-10, 2013  Hours: Thursday-Saturday, 11am-8pm; Sunday, 11am-7pmAdmission: $20312 West 33rd StreetScope has only been in existence for 13 years now, but it has created a name for itself as the show that up-and-coming artists want to be seen in.  With exhibitors from eighteen countries, 75 galleries are represented in this show.  What makes Scope so great are the interactive programs that they offer for audiences of all ages.  This year, their programs include a site-specific installation by Serra Victoria Bothwell Fels made of found lumber “that incorporates both a studied geometry and a spontaneous romanticism;” an interactive performance will take place by David Rohn, who will act as Walt Whitman within an enclosed space, responding to audiences through special period pieces.  First View of the show takes place on Wednesday, March 6, to benefit the SCOPE Foundation.ADAA: The Art ShowDates: March 6-10, 2013  Hours: Wednesday- Saturday, 12-8pm; Sunday, 12-5pm Admission: $25Park Avenue Armory (Park Avenue at 67th Street)The Art Show is now celebrating its 25th year in existence.  Run by the Art Dealers Association of America, The Art Show “features thoughtfully curated solo, two-person, and thematic exhibitions” of works of all mediums, from the modern and contemporary periods.  Seventy-two galleries and dealers will present their art at this fair.  Look out for New York favorites, Acquavella, Pace, DC Moore, David Nolan, and Hirschl & Adler Galleries.  A gala preview will take place on Tuesday, March 5, to benefit the Henry Street Settlement.Armory Arts WeekDates: March 5-10, 2013Admission: VariesThe Armory Show is arguably the biggest contemporary arts fair in America.  Now celebrating its centennial year, the show has decided “to launch its first ever series of public programming in celebration of the City’s unparalleled artistic communities in a different neighborhood each night.”  If you can’t make it to (or can’t afford) the actual shows this week, try gallery-hopping and partying in New York’s greatest art neighborhoods.  Tuesday, March 5 is Uptown and Museum Mile Day – enjoy a tour of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, sketch at the Society of Illustrators, or stop by the Jewish Museum for discounted admission.  Wednesday, March 6 is the Armory Show Opening Preview Benefit at the Museum of Modern Art – tickets begin at $5000.  Bronx Day and SoHo Night takes place on Thursday, March 7 – enjoy the BxArts Happy Hour, visit an outdoor exhibition at the Bartow-Pell Mansion, or gallery-hop in SoHo.  On Friday, March 8, celebrate Long Island City Night with exhibitions at MoMA PS1, the Noguchi Musuem, and the Fisher Landau Center.  Chelsea Day and Brooklyn Night take place on Saturday, March 9 – have brunch with an artist at the Johannes Vogt Gallery, join a talk with the curator of the International Center of Photography at Andrea Meislin Gallery, visit artists’ open studios, and participate in a silent art auction.  The final day, Sunday, March 10, features the Lower East Side and Downtown – gallery-hop and have brunch in the LES, or enjoy a tour with prominent dealers.View the list »

It’s finally here. March has blown in and the art world is getting ready for the most important week of the year: Armory Week. It’s the week when galleries from around the world present their wares in art fairs across the city. The public is welcomed to partake in their excitement, which includes opening night parties, lectures, family activities, and of course the art itself. Here’s your guide to what’s happening.

  • The Armory ShowDates: March 7-10, 2013  Hours: Thursday-Sunday, 12-7pmAdmission: $30Piers 92 and 94 (12th Avenue at 55th Street)The Armory Show is celebrating its 100th year in existence and is celebrating accordingly.  This is the show that everyone goes to – from the curious onlookers to the celebrity art collectors – and it is known as the premiere art fair in the country.  Prices for artworks at the Armory Show can extend to upwards of $1 million.  There are four sections folded into the show: Contemporary, Modern, Not-for-Profits, and Armory Focus: USA.  On Pier 94, you’ll find the contemporary fair, where over 130 galleries are exhibiting; Pier 92 features over 60 galleries with modern art.  The Armory Focus features artworks from 17 recognized galleries in the United States.  Programming is also heavy at the Armory, including an Open Forum, which consists of special talks that focus on the history of the Armory Show; film screenings; art tours; and even family programs such as art workshops, created in conjunction with the Children’s Museum of the Arts.
  • Volta Art FairDates: March 7-10, 2013  Hours: Thursday, 2-8pm; Friday-Saturday, 11am-8pm; Sunday, 11am-6pm82 Mercer StreetIf you don’t go to any other art fair next week, make sure you at least stop by Volta.  Volta is “an invitational show of emerging solo artists’ projects.”  The show features 95 international galleries, which present engaging and exciting works of art.  Special talks will take place throughout the course of the weekend.  Volta will present its works in a brand new location, moving from its spot across from the Empire State Building to a “50,000 square-foot event space spread over two floors in the heart of SoHo.”  Be on the lookout for the Richard Heller Gallery from Santa Monica, California; VIGO Gallery from London; Toronto’s Cooper Cole Gallery; and the Galerie Depardieu from Nice, France.
  • The IndependentDates: March 7-10, 2013  Hours: Thursday, 4-9pm; Friday-Saturday, 11am-8pm; Sunday, 11am-5pmAdmission: Free548 West 22 StreetThis year marks only the fourth year of the Independent, including over 40 galleries from around the world.  The fair this year is dedicated to the non-profit institutions that were affected by Hurricane Sandy in New York.  Some works to look out for include Anne Neukamp’s Untitled, Devin Leonardi’s Revival of Affection, Eva Kotatkova’s Theatre of Speaking Objects, Erica Baum’s Perch, and Marie Lorenz’s Archipelago.
  • Moving Image Contemporary Video Art FairDates: March 7-10, 2013  Hours: Thursday-Saturday, 11am-8pm; Sunday, 11am-4pmAdmission: Free269 11th AvenueThe only fair this week to be dedicated entirely to the art of video, Moving Image allows audiences an opportunity to fully appreciate the work it takes to create movies and projected pieces.  Connected events include the opportunity to view selected films at Nitehawk Cinema, a panel discussion at El Museo del Barrio, and a Sunday brunch at the fair itself.  Probably the smallest show of the week, less than 40 artists are represented here.
  • Fountain Art FairDates: March 8-10, 2013  Hours: Friday, 5-7pm; Saturday, 12-7pm; Sunday, 12-5pmAdmission: $1069th Regiment Armory (68 Lexington Avenue at 25th Street)Fountain is known for its alternative art from small independent galleries across the city. Over 50 exhibitors will be presenting art at Fountain this year, in the same location that the original Armory Show was held one hundred years ago.  Fountain carries on the legacy of artists and galleries who have pushed the meaning of art, breaking boundaries then and now.  Part of what makes Fountain so exciting is the nightlife, featuring performances and DJ-hosted dance parties that take place on Friday and Saturday nights after the fair until midnight.  In addition, Fountain also features a special site-specific installation every year; this year, Robots Will Kill and Mighty Tanaka will present a floating installation comprised of oversized canvases hanging from the Armory’s rafters, each canvas highlighting the city’s street art community.
