Appreciating Jackie Chan's supercharged film explosions

Jackie Chan is recognized across the world as one of the greatest action superstars of all time. He's choreographed some of the most involved and incredible martial arts sequences to ever be put to film. Considering he started out as a stunt double who was forced into Bruce Lee's shadow, Jackie Chan would eventually branch out on his own, be allowed to portray his own style on-screen, utilize the comedy he's become known for, and make a name for himself while establishing a cinematic legacy any star in the film industry would be extremely proud of.

While Jackie Chan will be remembered for the fast paced action that can be found in films like "Drunken Master," "Armour of God," and "Rumble in the Bronx" and has become known for his lighthearted comedy, the Chinese actor has also incorporated some of the biggest explosive sequences anyone has ever filmed. Explosions that would make John Woo envious, Robert Rodriguez discouraged, and put anything Michael Bay has done to shame. While that may be a bit of an exaggeration, the truth of the matter is that Jackie Chan knows how to make things blow up way more than people give him credit for.

This is a short list highlighting some of the best explosions found in Jackie Chan films.

Police Story (1985)

Police Story (1985)

While the explosions in this sequence aren't exactly massive, the opening car chase in the slums after the shootout in "Police Story" is one of the most destructive action sequences to be put to film. Jackie Chan levels and destroys everything in his path without a second thought and it only makes this scene that much more memorable.

Supercop (1992)

Supercop (1992)

Not one of my favorite Chan adventures, but a film with its fair share of entertainment nevertheless, "Supercop" is noteworthy for at least one explosion in the second half of the film that is much larger than it has any right to be.

New Police Story (2004) - 01

Before "Little Big Soldier," "New Police Story" was easily my favorite semi-recent Jackie Chan film. In the first half hour when Jackie Chan's Senior Inspector Chan Kwok-Wing is still trying to adjust to life on the wagon and watches all of his fellow officers die in a deadly game he's the lone survivor of, this massive explosion occurs that Chan looks to have legitimately just barely escaped from.

Here's a different view of the same explosion from "New Police Story" moments later as Chan realistically runs for his life with a cart full of his comrades.

Crime Story (1993)
Crime Story (1993) Shout! Factory

Crime Story (1993)

One of the more serious Jackie Chan films, "Crime Story" is a personal favorite. Featuring an explosion that nearly devours an entire city block and a climax set inside of a burning building that is on the verge of combustion at any moment, "Crime Story" is littered with lawless frenzied mayhem and a must-see for Jackie Chan fans.

Police Story 2 (1988) - 01
Police Story 2 (1988) - 01 Shout! Factory

Police Story 2 (1988) - 01

Featuring not one but two monumental explosions, "Police Story 2" is bursting with eruptive action sequences and is a worthwhile sequel that not only lives up to the original but is also able to surpass it at least as far as action goes. The explosion at the mall is big enough as it is...

Police Story 2 (1988) - 02

But the one at the end of the film at the fireworks factory has to be one of the biggest in not only any Jackie Chan film but any film period. The explosion only seems to grow exponentially in size and is gigantically tremendous as it plays over the end credits.
