Have you visited the Animal Snackers Bakery at the 2nd Street Market lately? The bakery always has something new for dogs, cats, rabbits and other pocket pets. In addition to their year-round bakery offerings, the bakery always has extra-fancy seasonal treats for the four-legged family members. These deluxe treats look so much like cocktail party hors d’ oeuvres that you may be tempted to try one.…and you can if you like, as all ingredients used are high-quality food grade.
The bakery is operated by Friends of the Humane Society and is the main fundraiser for the group, which supports the efforts of the Humane Society of Greater Dayton in caring for abandoned animals in our area. All treats are homemade by the dedicated volunteers. The bakery always has a large selection of handmade gourmet treats and toys for dogs and cats, and even the bunnies and other herbivores will enjoy gnawing on the vegetarian Rotti Biscotti and the vegetarian Sesame Crunchers.
The treats have names like Puggle Porcupines, Rottie Biscotti, and Cat-A-Tonic Tasty Treats, and the ingredients are listed on a card, so pets with sensitivities to egg or wheat can still enjoy a healthy gourmet snack. At least forty different varieties of treats are offered weekly, out of a rotating group of over seventy different recipes.
Some of the baked treats are little works of art in themselves, as you can see in the slideshow – currently, clever little chicken-shaped cookies and peanut butter 'frog' cookies are being offered, among many others. Most of the savory treats are priced 3/$1.00 but the extra large or extra fancy may sell from 50 cents to $2.00 each.
There is always an ever-changing assortment of toys at the bakery as well; currently they have a very cute selection of plush toys in vegetable shapes and some fall and Halloween-themed toys, along with the usual pull toys, balls, Kong toys, cat grass, cat crinkle toys and catnip toys. Many other entertaining items are in stock, waiting for your pets! Volunteers make most/all of the catnip toys, using extremely freshly-dried catnip.
The well-dressed pet will want some of their bandannas with autumn-type designs which are currently available; these bandannas are also handmade by the Friends of the Humane Society volunteers. You can also pick up a quality leash or collar as well.
Both the market and the bakery are open three days every week. Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
