The yellow buses soon will be whizzing by, and the sounds of school bells will replace the ice cream truck jingle. It is a sad time for any students wanting summer to go on forever. However, there are plenty of exciting activities starting in the fall, including music programs! Below are three different after-school music programs that sure to please any student.
1. Girls Rock Philly
Located in Fishtown, Girls Rock Philly (GRP) is a non-profit music organization that aims to empower young females. Each August, GRP hosts a week-long camp where girls form bands and write a song in 5 days. GRP has now expanded to offer year-round programing. Their after-school program is similar to the camp but extended over a semester-long period. The program meets for two afternoons a week. They also offer a weekly drop-in program called the Barrucuda Club. With a sliding scale $0-10, it is very budget friendly. Instrument lessons are available too. 2. Rock to the Future
Rock to the Future is a free after-school program. Similar to Girls Rock Philly, this program focuses on instrument instruction and forming a band. It runs for three hours each weekday. They also offer homework help from tutors. Bands also get to record their songs. Students must be able to agree to come for the whole school year and only low-income families are eligible to participate in the program. Rock to the Future is held in Kensington. 3. Tune Up Philly
Perhaps classical music is more up the student's alley. Tune Up Philly offer lessons in a variety of orchestral instruments, including woodwinds and strings. This program is run by the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra and is completely free of charge. The group meets Monday through Friday afternoons and trains in an orchestra which then performs at different events. Tune Up Philly takes place at People to People Charter School in North Philadelphia. See their Facebook page for more details https://www.facebook.com/TuneUpPhilly
