Do you remember the quote: "you have to understand the past to understand the present" or "history repeats itself"? Parisian marketing/advertising professional and artist, David Redon, has executed this by creating his own quite genius works under the name Ads Libitum. Inspired by those old vintage ads you would have spotted in magazines between the 1940s-1960s eras to market products for sale, such as: Coke, toothpaste, cigarettes and things of that nature.
Redon has resurrected these vintage ads by implementing a modern twist, redirecting the vintage sales ads themes to either a current hit single or pop culture reference, such as: "Take Care" by Drake, Kanye West hit "Stronger" and even hit song last year by "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk. Redon's work was greatly received after being seen on social media platform, Tumblr, and his fan base is still growing as we speak.
We received the chance to talk with Redon about his inspiration behind Ads Libitum, the music he's currently listens to and more:
What is behind the name "Ads Libitum"?
Redon: Ad Libitum means "all you want", so I changed ad by "ads", to invade the world with ads. At the moment, I've invaded mostly songs, I've tried once with a TV show (breaking bad), but perhaps there will be more tries soon.

What or who inspired you to make your artwork besides vintage ads?
Redon: I'm very inspired by advertising, since I work in an advertising agency. I love vintage ads, in particular American fifties and sixties ads, because they are very happy, colorful, naive and graphic. I love propaganda too, for example in Russia or in China.

What is your creative process for Ads Libitum?
Redon: First, I choose a song that inspires me ; the title has to sounds like an ad claim. I then choose a product that could illustrate this ad, then I search the web, ads, that I can use to illustrate this, sometimes I mix several ads, and I set the artist face, create a logo and a layout.

What do you want the world to know about you or Ads Libitum?
Redon: With the project I wanted to do something fun, as well as, talk about art and advertising which are very similar today. Artists work their image like brands, to touch more and more people and use marketing techniques. And advertising, use artists and art to make dream people.
