Yesterday Examiner Dorri Olds sat down with the director and co-writer Stu Zicherman and actor Adam Scott to talk about their indie, "A.C.O.D." The movie opens in theaters today, October 4, 2013. “A.C.O.D.” (Adult Children Of Divorce) is a dark comedy and drama that stars Adam Scott as Carter, a self-diagnosed well-adjusted restaurant owner with a stable relationship and beautiful girlfriend (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Carter has set strong boundaries between himself and his warring parents Hugh and Melissa (Richard Jenkins and Catherine O'Hara) who divorced when Carter was nine. The seething exes haven’t been in the same room since.
Carter’s little bro Trey, played by the adorable Clark Duke), asks his girlfriend of four months to marry him and tells Carter he wants both of their parents at the wedding. The previously calm and efficient Carter is gripped with anxiety and begins to unravel.
Carter runs to his childhood therapist Dr. Judith—played perfect pitch by scene-stealer Jane Lynch. Carter is aghast when he discovers she isn’t a therapist, just a quirky pop-psychologist. Unbeknownst to Carter, he’d been part of an amateur study for a book in which Dr. Judith summed him up as an A.C.O.D. hot mess.
Like all Indies,"A.C.O.D." is not mainstream but that’s the fun part. The strong cast includes Amy Poehler, Ken Howard, and Jessica Alba and this is quite an impressive film debut for director and co-writer Stu Zicherman.
"A.C.O.D." opens today in New York City at Landmark Sunshine Cinema and AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13. Comedy, drama. Rated R. 90 minutes.
