After the shocking news that Ben Affleck (Argo), Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty), and Tom Hooper (Les Miserables) did not receive nominations for Best Director despite Affleck winning pretty much every award from the BAFTA to the huge win at the Directors Guild of America, the list of nominees is somewhat surprising; previous winners Ang Lee and Steven Spielberg are part of Oscar routine and even David O. Russell's nomination isn't that shocking after his success with "The Fighter," but the inclusion of newcomer Benh Zeitlin and German director Michael Haneke is intriguing. This race is up for grabs.
