Traveling as a family brings a few challenges when planning a trip that will please everyone. While there are many things I would do on a vacation, I simply can not include them since I will have kids in tow during a family centered vacation. It can also be a challenge finding activities that are appropriate interest for all ages. We recently took a family trip to Whitefish, Montana and had the best family vacation experience to date. Everyone had fun start to finish. We all gave input on their top choices and we narrowed it down from a very large selection of things to do in Whitefish. Check out our list of 6 things to do in Whitefish Montana for the best family vacation ever!
Bar W Guest Ranch
Located just a few miles outside of charming Whitefish, Montana sits the Bar W Guest Ranch. This is all inclusive provided in an intimate style. Check in and get cozy in the lodge, a cabin or even a glamping tent. Enjoy three home cooked meals a day, daily trail rides, activities such as archery, clay shooting, roping and more. When not participating in scheduled activities, you can play games, ride bikes, swim or just sit back and relax and enjoy the ranch.
If you don't want to stay the night and just want to visit for horse riding lessons or a trail ride, those options are available too!
The Bar W is the perfect choice for families looking to spend some quality family time together, getting outside and getting active. Leave the electronics behind and just enjoy the company.
One of the activities we enjoyed with the folks at the Bar W Guest Ranch was a trip out to the Brash Rodeo. Located about 10 minutes from Whitefish, you will find cowboys and cowgirls from all over converging for some real bull and bronc riding entertainment.
The Brash Rodeo is a small venue with big time entertainment. A casual family friendly atmosphere makes this a must see attraction when visiting the area. Not only are there plenty of kids playing and enjoying the show, there are many up and coming young cowboys who participate in the rodeo as well!

Glacier National Park
You simply can not visit Whitefish without taking some time for Glacier National Park. There are many ways to explore from a simple drive up to Logan's Pass for stunning views on the Continental Divide, or chose hikes from simple to challenging. Stay the night at the lodge or pack along a tent for one of the many campgrounds. If you are lucky, you may even experience wildlife such as bald eagles and bears like we did during our drive!

While you are in the area of Glacier National Park, I suggest scheduling a whitewater rafting trip with Glacier Raft Company. There are a few outfitters in the area, however, Glacier Raft Company consistently achieves high marks for providing safe family fun.
You have the option of choosing half day or full day tours ranging from scenic floats to more adventurous whitewater tours. All tours take you through the Middle Fork of the Flathead River and will provide you with fantastic moments.
We chose the half day whitewater with our kids and we had a wonderful time. Even when my youngest (8 years old) got a bit scared, our guide talked her through it and settled her in to the floor of the boat to hang on tight through the higher class rapids.

Whitefish Mountain Gondola
Last but certainly not least is a visit to Whitefish Mountain. Formerly Big Mountain, Whitefish Mountain not only offers traditional Winter activities, it also offers a large variety of Summer fun.
Take a ride in the gondola for a scenic ride, cruise down the alpine slide, fly through the air on a zip line, walk through the tree tops, challenge yourself at the aerial adventure park and more. There are activities for the whole family to provide you with a full day of fun. Do it all while enjoying the views from up atop this beautiful mountain.

When staying in Whitefish, don't forget to take some time to spend downtown. It will provide you with a day of entertainment itself.
With plenty of shopping for all interests, coffee shops, restaurants, arts and crafts, historic train depot and performing arts center, downtown Whitefish has plenty to offer for everyone.
One of our favorite stops was the ice cream shop of course. Sweet Peaks seems to be a local favorite gathering place for good reason. The home made ice cream is delicious and what better way to spend time with family!
