How can we build our faith and follow in the path that God sets before us. We are not alone in this walk. He is right there beside us, but we also need to know where to look. There are several things that we can do to help us to understand God, who He is and what His purpose for us.
1. Read and meditate in the Word
One of the best ways to build your faith is to be in the Word. The Bible helps to give us a picture into God’s heart. It is His story written to us so that we may know Him. The Bible is literally our road map to know how we should live. No matter our circumstance, there is an answer to every question. The key is to knowing where to look. Reading the words, meditating on them and then applying it to our lives helps to build our faith and gets us one step closer to the heart of God.
“Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4
2. Prayer builds our faith
Why should we pray and how does that build our faith? Prayer is a way of serving and obeying God. It is a foundation of our faith. It helps us to commune with God and to know him intimately. There are many reasons that we pray: to obtain solutions to our problems to overcome barriers in our lives, pray for illnesses and ailments, to prepare us for the next state of life, to pray for the lost and those who cannot pray for themselves and so many more. Pray is a means of getting to know God, to see how He is working in our lives and those around us. We pray because He commands us to have faith in Him.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
3. Honor Him in worship
Worship is the act of honoring, giving praise and reverence to God. It should not be a half-hearted thing. Our worship should not be about us, to make us feel good or be fulfilled but to honor God for what He has done for us. It should come from a heart that desired Him alone. Worship is not just about singing and praise but it is a way of serving God. Serving Him as we offer Him ourselves daily.
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” Romans 12:1
“True worship is to be so personally and hopelessly in love with God, that the idea of a transfer of affection never even remotely exists.” A. W. Tozer
4. Be realistic with where you are at
To build faith, it helps to be real with where we are at in our walk with God. He already knows our hearts but He wants us to come to Him anyway. He wants us to be dependent on Him and relinquishing the control of our lives because He wants to intimately know us. Be real with where you are at because He can take it. There is nothing that He doesn’t understand. It doesn’t matter where we are or where we have been, He loves us no matter what. There is nothing that can separate us from His love.
“neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:39
5. Share your story
Build your faith by sharing it with others. We need each other to help us grow and be accountable as we walk in the way that God wants us to. By being vulnerable with others and sharing our experiences it encourages us to know that there are others that have been through similar circumstances. God creates us to share in each other’s burdens, to encourage one another as we face the challenges of the world. We need each other.
“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” Thessalonians 5:11
We are the example of God to others. By building our faith, we grow closer to God and set an example for those who don’t know Christ. The way that we show our faith speaks louder than our words can. Continue to grow in faith, to be intimately connected to God and know that He uses you in the lives of others.
