'What's in it for me?', a question which rings off the lips of many when they are asked to do something for others. America has becomes a society of doers, a people who do mostly for themselves. We have forgotten the lost art of helping others who are unable to help themselves. We have ceased to be a blessing to our neighbors. Many times we don't even know who our neighbors are.
In order to restore some hope in this world we need to learn to become a blessing to others. We need to share ourselves as God intended us to, not just by sharing the Gospel but also by sharing ourselves - by making ourselves a blessing to others. Blessing are remember forever, especially those which are done selflessly.
Help those who need the help.
One good way to be a blessing to someone is to help them when they need help.
The Bible says is Hebrews 13:16, ESV, "Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God."
Helping someone can take many forms. Maybe just mowing the grass for an elderly neighbor or taking someone who doesn't have a car to the grocery store or doctor. There are thousands of ways to use your time to be a blessing to others just take the time to look around.
Another good way to be a blessing to others is to listen.
Philippians 2:4, ESV says, "Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others."
A good way to show someone else you care about them and want to be a blessing in their lives is to listen to them. Not a casual listening with one ear planted in the conversation and the other ear planted elsewhere but listening with interest.
Listening with interest means adhering to the old adage "God gave us two ears and one mouth so we can listen more and speak less."
To be a true blessing the first person you need to listen to is God, then use what He tells you to be a bless others with the words He fills your ears and soul with.
Help others learn something new
We all have talents of some kind what better thing to do with them then them to those who want to learn what we know.
There is a verse in Romans 12:6-7 which states, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach;”
God did not give mankind gifts so we can hide them away. He gave each of us gifts to share, to bless others with, to use to help others. Imagine if every artist painted for themselves no one would no the beauty of the artwork but the artist. God shared his artwork, this world with us, we must do the same.
What's the world about today? It appears to be anger and short temperateness. People hide in their houses with fear as neighborhood after neighborhood is overtaken by violence. Love, love, love, where is the love.
One of the best ways to be a blessing to someone is to show them the love.
In Mark 12:30-31 Jesus, in answering a question by a Scribe had this to say, "And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these."
Of course the first thing we are to do is love God with all our hearts and souls but we are also called to love our neighbors. To be a blessing, the love poured out on our neighbors should not come in mere words, though sometime words are what people need, but other times it comes in the actions we take.
Love a neighbor, feed them, Love a neighbor, clothe them. Love a neighbor, give them a drink, You get the picture, when we love one another we are a blessing by meeting the other person's needs.
Be joyful at all times
What a sad world we seem to be living in. People walking around downcast, depressed, stressed out to the max. Where is the joy? Where is the joy which came with when things were simpler, when people mattered to each other.
Proverbs, God's book of wisdom has many things to say about wisdom. here are just two of those verses.
Proverbs 15:13, NIV A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.
Proverbs 17:22, ESV A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
God call us to be a blessing to others by being joyful. By offering them hope in a world which seems hopelessly lost.
