5 things Canada is famous for

Canada is a North American country that is located directly above the United States (the U.S.A and Canada actually share the world’s largest land boarder). Canada is a huge country that encompasses 3,854,085 square miles of land—this makes it the world’s second largest country (only Russia is bigger). Like the United States, the east coast of Canada boarders the Atlantic Ocean and the west coast boarders the Pacific Ocean. However Canada has a much lower overall population than the U.S. with only 35,344,962 inhabitants.

Canada is well known for its lovely landscapes. In fact, its flag depicts the maple leaf since there are so many maple trees in Canada. The capitol city is Ottawa and the largest city is Toronto. The national languages of Canada are English and French and the quality of life in Canada is excellent—in fact, it is one of the wealthiest countries in the world. The Canadian dollar is the national currency. The national anthem is “O Canada.”

Canada has a rich history and lots of interesting places to go and things to see. Below is a list of five things that Canada is famous for:

Maple Trees

Maple Trees

Maple trees grow abundantly in Canada. They are known to have large beautiful leaves that turn from green to bright red in the fall. There are so many maple trees in Canada that a red maple leaf even appears on the national flag!

Cirque du Soleil

Cirque du Soleil

Cirque du Soleil (which means “circus of the sun”) is a famous circus that originated in Quebec, Canada in 1984. Founded by two French-speaking street performers, Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix, the circus has become famous for its impressive acrobatic acts and extremely artistic (almost abstract)  performances. Versions of the circus currently appear all over the world.

Mounties is the term used for Canadian police officers who are officially known as the “Royal Canadian Mounted Police.” Mounties are recognizable due to their bright red uniforms and tan almost-cowboy-like hats.

"Just for Laughs" Festival

“Just for Laughs” (“Juste Pour Rire” in French) is a Canadian comedy festival that is held every July in the city of Montreal since 1983. The event is the largest international comedy festival in the world. The event’s mascot is a green monster with red horns named Victor (see photo).

Celine Dion

Celine Dion is one of the most famous singers ever to have emerged from Canada. Born into a French-speaking family in Quebec, Celine gained international fame for her beautiful voice. In the 1990s, her songs “Because You Loved Me” and “My Heart Will Go On” reached the top of the music charts.
