Food safety is a major issue as is the way food is prepared, not only at home but when we travel. What many people may not know is that simply washing food products is not always enough to prevent foodborne contamination and illness. According to National food safety expert and founder of EatCleaner.com, Mareya Ibrahim is concerned about the efficacy of information given by industry experts regarding the use of only water as sufficient precaution in cleaning produce. Based on corroborating scientific studies that indicates more than a water rinse is needed for certain risky foods, Ibrahim advocates that the public should be educated on various food risks. For example, this author became extremely ill from contaminated vegetables when traveling to Myanmar (Burma). According to some of her local Burmese friends, they always soak vegetables in a saline solution for 24 hours before use. By simply doing this, it might have prevented her food-related illness.
