5 New York City day spas that are perfect for spring

See also

Spring is the time to get prepped for summer by treating yourself to a head-to-toe skin detox. In NYC, there are tons of options to choose from, but not all spas are created equal. It takes research to find those truly relaxing, change-your-life type of spots. So we’ve done the work for you. Following are five of the best day spas that Manhattan has to offer, as well as our top treatment picks. So if you've got some money to spend, go ahead and splurge. You're worth it.

Bliss SOHO

Bliss SOHO
568 Broadway, New York, NY 10012
(877) 862-5477

While we love all of the Bliss Spas around the country, we’re particularly enamored with Bliss SOHO, which we believe to be the best of the NYC bunch. The roomy waiting room is one of the reasons: the couches are cozy, there are always treats such as cheese and crackers, as well as pitchers of water and fresh tea.

And of course, all the treatments are divine

In addition, the front lobby is filled with beautiful Bliss goods. So if you fell in love with something that was used on you during a treatment (such as an oil, scrub, lotion or even a specific tool), chances are you can buy it when you check out. Sure, they’re cashing in by creating this beautiful lobby of beauty candy, but you’re benefitting too by taking home a piece of your spa experience, which you can recreate in your own shower or tub.

We Love: The Scrubs Deluxe, in which get to lay in a Vichy shower (did you get that? You’re lying down. In a shower. Heaven!), and get a full-body scrub using the Bliss scrub of your choice. Once rinsed, the treatment is followed by a through application of your choice of lotion. The Scrubs Deluxe is perfect for ridding yourself of all that built-up dry, winter skin, and you’ll leave feeling baby soft and ready for summer.

Cornelia Spa at The Surrey

Cornelia Spa at The Surrey
20 East 76th Street, New York, NY 10021
(626) 358-3600

Located inside The Surrey, one of the Upper East Side’s most luxe boutique hotels, the Cornelia Spa is the place to go if you’re looking for an exotic, one-of-a-kind treatment. The menu of services is filled with unique offerings, however the spa’s master therapists also like to work with their clients to make sure that the treatments chosen are custom tailored to suit their customers' tastes, skin types, problem areas and more.

The waiting rooms are comfortable, beautifully decorated, and stocked with nibbles, water and tea. The gauzy curtains add an extra essence of calm; one could easily sneak in a great meditation session while they wait for their scheduled treatment.

Cornelia also offers “Considered Moments," which are quick, lunchtime or late-day treatments that can be squeezed in between meetings or school pick-up times. If you're in the midst of a hectic day, but could really use a quick pick-me-up, this is perfect. Services take about 30 minutes and include a Mini Facial, a Mini Back Purifier, a Honey Skin Smoother and more.

We Love: The Champagne & Pearl Sugar Glow Body Polish, which is just about as luxurious sounding as a body treatment can get. Mother of Pear powder, which removes the build up of dead skin cells, is gently applied, leaving your skin polished and soft. This is followed by a warm Champagne Shimmer Oil, which heavily hydrates as well as adds a natural sparkle to your now-pampered derma. Lastly, an age-defying gold serum, which is mixed with the Mother of Pearl powder, is applied to your face. You’ll emerge from this treatment absolutely aglow, from head to toe.

Great Jones Spa

Great Jones Spa

Great Jones Spa
29 Great Jones Street, New York, NY 10012
(212) 505-3185

Perhaps best known for its indoor water lounge and cascading falls, the Great Jones Spa offers so much more than its curative bath treatments (though they are beyond fantastic, there's no doubt about that). The spa's treatment menu is extensive, and includes massages, facials, body treatments and even hair salon services; you can get a cut, color, conditioning treatment; you name it. Oh, and there's also a juice bar. So there's really nothing missing from this fabulous lower east side oasis.

We Love: Reiki Energy Work. Great Jones offers a Reiki treatment (which they refer to as “energy work”) which is an extremely intense, spiritual spa experience. If you’re not familiar with Reiki, it’s a Japanese technique that is used to reduce stress and help heal and restore the balance of energy within your body. Part massage, part meditation, it involves a technique called palm or hands-on healing, where you lie with your palms facing up, releasing your own universal energy while also receiving energy from your therapist. Clearly, there's much more to it, so just look it up.

But we love Great Jones' Reiki treatment because the session is so comfortable and calming. The therapists are top notch and you leave feeling a true rejuvenation within your soul.

If you're a skeptic and would never book anything with the word "energy" in it, try the Deep Tissue Massage, which should leave you well-worked and satisfied.

The Spa at the Mandarin Oriental New York
80 Columbus Circle at 60th Street, New York, NY 10023
(212) 805-8800

The holistic approach used at this high-end spa is bound to improve your mood as well as your skin. The NYC skyline makes for a beautiful backdrop, but you'll forget you're in the city altogether once you enter the Oriental Tea Lounge, the Amethyst Crystal Steam Room (pictured), or settle in for the specialized treatment of your choice.

The spa contains six treatment rooms with private showers, and the menu of services is wide-ranging and unique. Guests can wait on cozy couches while they relax with a beverage, or they can browse the spa boutique.

If you're really in the mood to treat yourself, you can book a VIP Spa Suite, which is essentially a mini hotel room where you can receive your treatment, which is tailored to the lavish environment of your private space

However the regular spa experiences are still wonderfully divine, and you'll feel just as pampered by the staff no matter what type of treatment you choose.

We Love: The Oriental Essence Body Massage, which is designed to relieve neck and shoulder tension. It's perfect for people who hold stress in their upper body, and the end result is a calm, soothing release of that stress and often, pain. It's one of the Mandarin Oriental’s signature spa therapies and they definitely know what they're doing. Plus, the oil combo of ginger, mandarin and frankincense is an aromatic dream.

Spa Martier & Salon New York City

Spa Martier & Salon New York City

Spa Martier & Salon New York City
1014 Second Ave. New York, NY 10022
(646) 781-9758

In terms of services, Spa Martier & Salon has just about everything a day spa could offer. It’s a full-service hair salon and nail parlor, as well as a spa that offers massages, facials, body treatments and more. Martier also scores big points for their no-fuss blow-out bar and fun weekly specials.

The downside, if you can even call it that, is that they offer so much, the space can feel a bit crowded and the choices can feel overwhelming. That said, all spa treatments are performed in serenely decorated rooms that are removed from the mayhem of the salon.

And if you’re into getting your nails done, Martier is a must. Perhaps the most extensive section of the menu are the manis; they offer all kinds of unique services, such as the Gold Leaf or the Green Tea Spa manicure, as well as awesome nail are like gel gradations and holograms.

Oh yeah, and they also have a café

We Love: The Deep Cleansing Facial, because it's honestly and truly deep. It's incredibly thorough, digging into every crevice and pore that needs unclogging, but at the same time, it's relatively gentle. Of course there's some intense touching going on, but as far as deep facials go, this one doesn't destroy your skin in the process. You won't leave looking like you spent the day with someone who poked and prodded at your face for fun.
