5 must-see shows for the weekend and beyond

Seattle theater seems to be blooming right along with the first days of spring. In case you are having a tough time juggling your time between all of the different productions, here are few shows that are currently running - and a few that will be hitting the boards in just a few weeks - all worth the effort to catch on the stage.

Peter Brook brings his immense directing talent back to Seattle with this captivating tale set in apartheid South Africa. You won't want to miss the exceptional cast as they weave music, dance and great acting chops into this heartfelt story.  

Plus the Rep is pairing this production with a great cause with its "See The Suit, Bring a Suit Clothing Drive." Donate business attire when you see The Suit and the Rep in turn will donate it to Dress for Success and Working Wardrobe of Redmond who provide work and interview appropriate clothing to men and women in the community.

The Importance of Being Earnest

Oscar Wilde certainly had his way with words. And the Seattle Shakespeare Company promises to turn his cleverest of phrases with precision in one of Wilde's most well-known and humorous plays.

Victor Pappas, who's busy slate includes work on an Arthur Miller play at ACT later this summer, directs this comedy full Wilde's wordplay.

The creative team behind the scenes of Royal Blood alone is worth the price of admission.  Scenic designer Jennifer Zeyl, sound designer Rob Witmer, lighting designer Evan Anderson, costume designer Anastasia Armes, and props designer Katherine Stromberger have transformed West of Lenin into an intimate space where a dysfunctional American family clings to their belief in a royal birthright.

This American family saga is the brainchild of local playwright Sonya Schneider who brings her tale to the stage in this world premiere production.

Seats are limited in the black box theater so its always wise to get your tickets in advance - and you'll definitely want tickets to this production.

The Edge of Our Bodies

You never know what you might find once you enter into the tiny enclave that is the Washington Ensemble Theatre. But you know it's always going to be good.

Next week, WET continues its 2014 season with the one-woman show "The Edge of Our Bodies." 

WET describes the show as "poetic and honest" as it focuses on a pregnant 16-year-old aspiring writer who heads to New York looking for a little meaning in the adult world she is about to enter.

Bethany
Bethany ACT Theatre

Bethany

America Ferrera took to the Broadway stage last year in this timely tale penned by Laura Marks. Set during the the recent economic downturn "Bethany"  focuses on a single mother (Crystal) navigating through the uncertain times and the lengths that she'll go to in order to survive.

Seattle thesp, Emily Chisholm, plays Crystal in this production for ACT with John Langs directing the action.
