5 haunted castles in England

Oxford Castle was built around 1066 but it wasn't until the end of the 11th century when it was replaced with stone. The castle was used for prisoners in the 18th century before that much of it was destroyed in the English Civil War.In 1785 near the grounds there was a prison complex created and in 1876 it was expanded and called, HM Prison Oxford, where it was used for prisoners up until 1996. Now after being redeveloped it's a hotel. With such a history the castle and the grounds have paranormal activity, a ghostly figure of the murderer, Mary Blandy is said to be walking around. She was executed in 1752 at the castle!  Other shadowy figures, white mists, and other strange things haunted the area. Just the foundation alone of Muncaster dates back to 79 A.D. The castle in whole was built in 1258. Henry IV was once giving shelter here and the Muncaster's owned the area till about 1917.A famous ghost is Tom Skeleton known as Tom Fool. He was a cruel Court Jester that if he hated someone he would kill them and he would also help get rid of people. He's never really seen but more heard and felt.The White Lady believed to be a murdered housekeeper, Mary Bragg has been seen wandering the castle garden and local roads. One of the most haunted rooms of the castle is the tapestry room.  Singing, baby crying, rattling of the door handle, dragging sounds, feeling of someone being there, dark masses, and even someone sitting on the edge of the bed, just some of the strange things that happened in this room. Hazelwood Castle was first talked about in the Doomsday book and the Vavasours had owned the area for over 900 years.  It has been steeped in history since then. When Henry VIII was persecuted the Catholics it was used as a safe haven for Catholic priests. It was a scene for many battles too. The ghost activity deals with a monk dressed in black that likes to haunts the rooms and a priest that haunts the Great Hall in to the library. Other reports are more of people feeling like there is someone is around  the castle but there isn't. So now Dudley Castle stands as it did in 1647 when it's fortifications were removed like in 1175 when Henry II ordered it after the owner rebelled against him. So that's just the brief history of the castle.Now to the ghosts, many say that Dudley is one of the most haunted places in England because of its history. One famous ghost that haunts the area is "The Grey Lady," whom was believed to be Dorothy Beaumont. Some say that she haunts the area because of her daughters death and because none of her wishes were done after she died.The Chapel of Undercroft  is said to be the most haunted location in the castle. People believed it is the ghost of Lord John Somery, his coffin is supposedly there and you can hear strange noises. So that's just some of the strange things that this place is known for.

Living in a castle is a dream for most but sometimes can be a nightmare especially if it is a haunted place. There is so much history in England that means many restless spirits. There castles are haunted by some of the most famous names in history like Anne Boleyn, the mother of Elizabeth I and the wife of Henry VIII. Some have seen her hanging around the Tower of London carrying her own head! These stories are gruesome!

It's indeed interesting on both a history and spooky note. The places listed have had their own share of pain and war. Back to the Tower of London again, that was a place where torture was handed out ever day and the story of the two Princes that disappeared and possibly murdered in the 15th century, make it a tragic and a very haunting place.

It was built by none other than William the Conqueror.The first ghost that was said to haunt the tower was Thomas A Beckett, who in history was murdered. Abrella Stuart, another ghost of the area stays in the Queen's House on Tower Green, many believe that she was a victim of murder.The White Tower is one of the oldest buildings which it has it's own White Lady. She is said to have stood once at a widow and waves to passing children. The headless body of Anne Boleyn hangs around, the princes that disappeared during the 15th century haunt the crowds. It's still debated who killed them but their uncle Richard III has always been the suspect. So the Tower of London is a place that is rich in history and also a very haunted area.
