Did you ever find yourself reciting a line from some great novel that had been stuck somewhere inside your psyche since the moment you first read it? Regardless of the length or the original context in which it was used, the words made an impression on you and have kept you company, whether you were conscience of it or not, only to resurface at those perfect times in life, when they just seem to fit. I know I have.
Whether it was the first sentence or the last or something in between, the words hit a nerve or touched a part of you that very few things can reach. Perhaps it was the moment when the hero spoke his last, or when the villain revealed a piece of his soul that changed everything you thought about him or maybe, it was that one perfect sentence that just summed up all that needed to be said. Once again, the answer to what makes a great quote is subjective and up to the individual reader.
As I started work on this list, I realized it would be a very difficult endeavor. Though I might be able to find some of my favorite quotes, narrowing those quotes down to one per book would be a job for King Solomon.
With that in mind, here are just a few that made a distinct impression on me. I hope you enjoy the ones you recognize and consider the ones you don’t. Either way, they have made us think and isn’t that what a great sentence, a great book and a great author are supposed to do?
