New York City is one of the most famous and visited cities in the world. Home to 8 million people, New York City is one of the most populated locations on earth. Although New York City is part of America, Manhattan (the “heart” of NYC) is actually located on an island! In fact, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island are ALL located on islands off the coast of the continental United States. Of all five New York City boroughs, only the Bronx is on the mainland. Due to this fact, New York City is absolutely dependent on bridges to transport people to and from the city and so the location is linked with some of the most well-known bridges in the world.
New York City has made a tourist attraction out of several of its bridges—especially the famed Brooklyn Bridge that has become an iconic image of NYC. Many television shows, movies, and music videos are filmed in New York City and include scenes of the bridges. Therefore, several of the bridges are well-known even to people who have never stepped foot in North America. Most of the bridges have distinctive designs so it is relatively easy to tell the difference between them once one has watched enough NYC-centered media.
Below is a list of five of New York City’s most well-known (and well used) bridges.
