Human beings must share the earth with other animals—this inescapable fact has sometimes caused conflict but it has also led to some interesting relationships between separate species. Animals and humans have a long history together; sometimes friendly and other times antagonistic. The interaction between humans and animals is often complicated and historically longwinded. Yet animals have inarguably done much to help the progression of human society. Throughout history there is evidence that animals helped people travel to far off locations, construct large buildings, and even fight wars.
In almost every society animals have played some kind of role in helping humans in a myriad of subjects from travel, to construction to medical/health purposes. In modern day America, many homes include at least one pet and a surprising number of these animals actually work to help people stay healthy or maintain a good quality of life. For example, many people who have disabilities, like blindness, depend on seeing-eye-dogs to get around in their everyday life. Other dogs can be trained to sense other ailments like impending seizures in people who have conditions such as epilepsy.
Until this day it is not unusual for people to travel on horses and donkeys. In other parts of the world people still frequently travel around on camels and elephants! Although machines have replaced creatures when it comes to tasks like construction, animals are still very much a part of human society. Below is a list of five animals that have aided humans in the past or present.
