2013 Oscar Recap

Let's be thankful that all the acting winners actually deserved to win this year.  There wasn't a career achievement type scenario. There wasn't a flash in the pan winner.  Hathaway and Lawrence are the two best young actresses in Hollywood, Daniel Day Lewis is a living legend at this point, and Waltz is quickly becoming the one of the greatest actors of the new century.  Apparently, falling down on your way to accept an award you've just won at age 23 is a good way to buy sympathy from an audience full of people predisposed to hate your living guts.  P.S. If you have a chance, check out the video of her press conference backstage immediately after accepting the award. I'm not going to lie.  I enjoyed Seth MacFarlane as Oscar host much more than I thought I would.  He was better than the overly tame Billy Crystal last year.  He was better than the James Franco Experience.  He was better than Alec Baldwin & Steve Martin, who were surprisingly light on material.  I'd put him slightly behind John Stewart.  Of course he made some sexists jokes, but who are we kidding, if you didn't expect that you have only yourself to blame for watching.  I laughed out loud numerous times, particularly at the Von Trapp Family joke, the sock-puppet reenactment of Flight, and the audience reaction to his Lincoln Assassination joke.  I have to agree with MacFarlane, 148 years seems long enough.  However, he did make a few too many self-depricating jokes.  He put too much of the focus on himself, and not enough on the awards and the nominees.  The entire bit with Captain Kirk was funny, but a little too meta for this type of award show.  View the list »

  • In a win that shocked absolutely nobody, Argo won best picture.  Don't get me wrong, I liked Argo alot.  It won't go down like Crash or Chicago, but will we be talking about Argo in ten years?  Or will we be talking about Django Unchained, Zero Dark Thirty and The Master?  
  • Can anybody tell me why they chose to reenact Chicago, of all things?  Was it just a reason to get Catherine Zeta Jones on stage?  How about Singing in the Rain?  How about more tap dancing by Joseph Gordon Levitt and Daniel Radcliffe?  Those two are truly delightful, something that I can't say about "All That Jazz."
