2013-2014 Chicago Yellowbook lists 20 golf courses

Columbus Park Golf Course has the third listing in the recent, Chicago Yellowbook. This Chicago Park District Golf Course consists of only nine holes. On Chicago's, west side, this is a popular course during golf season. Their checkered flag, which consists of blue and black squares and a center rectangle, is almost a work of art. Nonetheless, many golfers will appreciate this design. Golfers, remember to replace these flags into their holes after you finish putting.In a snowy environment, the wooden signs for Billy Caldwell Golf Course contrast highly with the snow cover. In addition, the yellow lettering on these signs contrast highly with the dark wood. On the east side of this golf course's clubhouse, some golfers who are driving may not see this sign until after they park in the small size-medium size parking lot. Golf course maintenance personnel have positioned these signs close to the ground, perhaps to prevent wind gusts from blowing them away.The welcome at Burnham Woods Golf Course consists of two signs. Entries #3, #5, #12, #14, #16, #17, #18 and #19 are part of the Chicago Park District. The address for S S Marquette Park (7430 S. Rockwell Avenue) is different from the Marquette Park Golf Course address, which is 6700 S. Kedzie Avenue, so I assume S S Marquette Park is indoor golf. (I hope to get more details for a future article.)

Entries #1, #2, #6 and #11 are part of Forest Preserve Golf. Burnham Woods Golf Course is actually in Burnham, Ill. instead of Chicago. The address listing for Indian Boundary Golf Course Maintenance Department is the same for the golf course of the same name.

Entries #4, #7, #13, #15 and #20 are very likely indoor, golf facilities/instruction that allow golfers to practice using electronic apparatus. (Number 4, #15 and #20 are in downtown Chicago.) Hourly rental fees for simulator use, and club rental fees are likely available.

Entries #8, #9 and #10 are at the same location--10807-11001 S. Doty Avenue. Harborside is a large complex that contains two, championship, links style golf courses; putting greens; chipping greens; and a driving range. (Last year, greens fees were at least $80.)

  • Conforming to a common, design template that consists of two, wooden boards, the welcome signs at Edgebrook Golf Course have positions somewhat far from the golf course's entrance. (Before seeing these signs, a metal sign on the left side will greet driving golfers as they leave Central Avenue, and drive onto this course's, long driveway.) Of course, these signs', yellow lettering, which contrasts highly with the dark wood, increase visibility. Golf course maintenance personnel have positioned these signs somewhat high, perhaps to allow deer to scoot under them. (It is rare for golfers to avoid seeing deer on this golf course.)
  • At the end of a very long driveway is a display of Harborside International Golf Complex's layout. (Golfers who enter this facility on foot will have a long, uphill walk.) A large driving range is to the left, along with putting greens and chipping greens. The golf shop, which is to the right, sells tees, gloves, golf shoes, golf balls, and of course, receives payments for greens fees. Although I have not see it, I expect the banquet room to be large. The parking lot is huge; I estimate that it can accommodate at least 100 cars.
  • This sign for Indian Boundary Golf Course is at the eastern end of West Forest Preserve Avenue. Although there are the typical, wooden board signs after golfers enter the golf course grounds, this cloth sign is at the golf course's, eastern end near the 17th and 18th holes. Indian Boundary Golf Course is a popular, 18 holes golf course on Chicago's, northwestern side. This course is not a championship course, and this quality attracts many golfers who are moderate amateur golfers.
  • This rounded, rectangular, green sign has the distinctive design for Chicago, park signs. (Columbus Park, Douglas Park and Washington Park all have this design.) Although this sign does not indicate the direction to Jackson Park Golf Course (The golf course is further east about 1/8 mile.), it indicates to residents and visitors that Jackson Park is a large park, second only to Washington Park. Jackson Park includes space for a golf driving range; at least one, track and field area; several, tennis courts; many, flower beds; a wide lagoon; and of course, the golf course which has 18 holes. Chicago's Museum of Science & Industry is at Jackson Park's northern boundary. 
  • The sign for Marquette Park Learning Center is east of Kedzie Avenue. In 2011, this sign was at the entrance of a long, winding path that led to the driving range. Marquette Park Golf Course, which is west of Kedzie Avenue, is a nine hole course that is moderately difficult. This course's parking lot is small, but abundant parking is available on winding roads streets throughout the park. (For 2013, the City of Chicago may have installed parking meters on these streets.)
  • In addition to giving the direction to Sydney Marovitz Golf Course (within 500 feet), this sign, which is near Addison Avenue, Recreation Drive and North Lake Shore Drive, gives directions to the clock tower and tennis courts. Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course is a Chicago Park District, nine holes course on Chicago's, north side lakefront. This golf course is challenging; it has many sand bunkers, and wind blowing toward or away from Lake Michigan will push golf balls off course.
