Manchester, NH still collecting stamps

In an era of electronic mail there are still a few that try to preserve the traditions of old. Although it may seem there can’t be much to collect these days the United States Postal Service  still produces an unimaginable number of stamps – commemorative and definitive – not to mention all sorts of other neat philatelic items to collect! In Manchester, once each month, on the 4th Monday, the Manchester Stamp Club meets at Villa Crest Retirement Community on Hanover St. discussing these lovely pieces of paper from the US and other countries.

Actually, the club, who has about 15-20 of its roughly 30 members attend each month, is looking for a new location to hold their meetings because they’re outgrowing the conference room Villa Crest has provided them with. If you have a large conference room available for this non-profit organization please contact the president Bob Dion.

The Manchester Stamp Club has been a part of Manchester for quite some time. This past April they held their 50th QPEX (Queen City Philatelic Expo) and Joel Klein has been a member since the 1950’s. For everything the club does, they continue to make it a bargain to be part of this organization.
Aside from the annual Stamp Expo, they hold an auction every other month, and when they’re able to they have speakers come in to talk on various topics. These are only a few of the activities the club has to offer.

At face value, stamp collecting may not seem all that important but according to Chip Bergeron, the club’s secretary / editor, collecting stamps helped him with history when he was in high school. If you have a son or daughter, it could give them a way to boost their history grades too! Postage stamps tell stories and relay information; any good stamp album will note some of the history that is associated with the stamp going in the space reserved for it.

Stamp collecting can be a lot of fun, teach a little bit of history of the US and countries throughout the world. Stamps talk about people, places, and more that you may find yourself fascinated with if you try picking up a decent album and a few stamps – if your interest grows, you may find yourself at a future meeting of the Manchester Stamp Club!
