As it gets closer to the New Year, take a few moments to think about how you want 2010 to be different than 2009. A New Year's Resolution is something that a person resolves to do, or not to do anymore as a traditional way to embrace a New Year.
The problem with New Year's resolutions is that they don't make it through the year, and statistics show that many don't even make it to the six-month mark.
So how can you have greater success with your New Year's Resolution this year so that you can actually SEE the results of what you SAY?
- Make One Resolution, with multiple milestones - Example: 'To lose 20 pounds this year by losing 5 pounds each quarter' - Breaking up the resolution makes it more manageable and realistic
- Take ample time to prepare to successfully achieve the resolution - For the previous example...determine what changes in diet, exercise, lifestyle, routine, etc, are required for you to take the actions necessary to achieve the resolution. Start this process before the New Year begins.
- Visualize yourself achieving the goal - Use vision boards, journals, or vision words to allow you to see yourself achieving that goal.
- Get an accountability partner, coach or advisor to help you stay on track and keep you focused on your 'why' and the 'how' of your resolution.

You are absolutely right in that New Year's resolutions hardly ever last more than a few months. One simple point that I stress to my clients when setting New Years resolutions is to break their goals down into manageable steps. By doing this, they are easier to obtain.
