Commentary from the liberterrain…
World Boxing Council welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. may not be too big to fail but on Friday he became too big to jail.
In today's post-Constitution/post-Bill of Rights America the ruling class powercrats can do anything they wish with near impunity when it comes to expanding and protecting their unbridled lust for power, wealth and ego fulfillment.
Instead of beginning his three-month jail stint a Las Vegas judge postponed Mayweather's sentence so he can compete in a welterweight championship bout.
He already had his six-month sentence cut in half, so why is he getting more special treatment than few, especially poor and minority citizens, could ever hope to get?
Because the politically connected money masters who run Vegas want it that way.
Mayweather is a big payday for his handlers, the boxing racket, state and federal tax-gobbling bureaucracies and politicos on the take.
And more. According to a Reuters article, Mayweather's bout, especially if it's a long-anticipated match-up with World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, is "expected to benefit hotels and businesses that typically profit from a major prize fight, which can generate $10 million to $15 million in non-gambling revenue."
Makes one wonder whose orders the judge was following.
The forgotten person in this little gambit seems to be Josie Harris.
Mayweather didn't perpetrate any offense against "the state" or "society." He committed a crime against an individual person.
Specifically, again quoting from the Reuters story, "he pleaded guilty last month to one charge of felony battery and no contest to two counts of harassment stemming from a 2010 attack on his ex-girlfriend Josie Harris and verbal threats against two of his children with Harris."
This is a perfect situation to consider the libertarian concept of justice: the victimizer must pay restitution to the person he victimized, not to some amorphous "state" or "society."
Harris may have more interest in a monetary settlement than jail time for her attacker. How is she compensated by Mayweather sitting in a cage for several months?
Let the two lawyers sit down with a judge or arbitrator and decide how much of Mayweather's purse gets turned over to Harris. That would be justice.
(NOTE: The libertarian idea of restitution rather than punishment in these types of cases may be new to many readers, libertarians included. Those who are interested might start their self-education here and here.)
