News from the liberterrain...
The Dallas Morning News, like so many ink and paper dailies who claim The Newspaper of Record status in their areas, likes to send out questionnaires to political candidates asking for their positions on various issues and then publish the results in the hopes of sparking, if not controversy and debate, at lease circulation.
John Jay Myers, the Libertarian Party's candidate for Pete Sessions' US Congress job representing Texas' 32nd district, has made his responses available to the Dallas Libertarian Examiner.
The following excerpts solidify Myers stance as a "Libertarian's Libertarian," pulling no punches when it comes to the freedom movement's most fundamental political principles.
Asked what changes he would recommend in Obama's Afghan strategy, Myers opens this way:
"Afghanistan is a quagmire. We need to get out of it immediately. Hunting down and killing the Al Qaeda terrorists responsible would have been an appropriate response to 9/11. Occupying Afghanistan, changing the regime and propping up a new government was not."
Asked what strategies the US should employ in Iraq after US withdrawal, the candidate's preamble will scandalize faithful Bushies and Obamatrons alike. (Others may question his charitable use of the word "borderline.")
"Iraq was one of the biggest mistakes in United States history. I am not sure if “mistake” goes far enough. I would almost say that the invasion of Iraq based on trumped up charges of weapons of mass destruction that had absolutely no connection to 9/11 was borderline treason."
Switching to closer-to-home issues the DMN editors wonder how officeholders, current and would-be, would handle the Mexican drug cartels.
No one worthy of the moniker "libertarian" will have any problem with Myers response.
"If you want to destroy drug cartels and gang members, end the war on drugs so they will have no choice but to get honest jobs."
As for the fully fleshed-out comebacks to these and other questions (What should the government's role be in promoting alternative energy sources? "None." Obamacare? "I would have voted against it." Stimulus package? "Failed.") you'll have to wait for publication in Big D's Newspaper of Record.
The responses "will be submitted to the DMN Friday," says Myers.
So be watching a driveway near you.

Do any of us really think that the DMN will actually publish these in a suitable manner, or just use it to point out that we libertarians are hopelessly out of touch?
Wow, someone who makes sense and wants to stop wasting our money on trumped up phony wars!!!!
Since government produces nothing and has nothing it doesn't steal from the people, it has no business doing anything not supported by voluntary contributions.
When government is reduced to holding bake sales and turkey shoots to wage aggressive war, then we will have arrived. And there would be no problem getting enough folks together to voluntarily repel an invasion.
Thank goodness for candidates like John J. Myers. There is hope after all!
