Legislation to promote urban farming in Missouri is expected to be signed into law today. This legislation establishes an Urban Farming Task Force, which will investigate the impact of urban farming and sustainable living communities in the state.
Urban farming is the the practice of cultivating, processing and distributing food in, or around, a village, town or city. Around the world, 800 million people are already involved with urban farming and its already taking place in New York and California.
It already has some roots in St. Louis, as initiatives like City Seeds have established urban farms in the St. Louis area. An urban farm like City Seeds can provide job training and nutrition education while helping the economy and helping people get back on their feet.
One of the ways that the task force wants to encourage urban farming is to convert abandoned buildings in St. Louis into produce centers, creating jobs and improving current real estate. Abandoned buildings can pose problems, as a 2008 news investigation found that nearly 700 fires happened in vacant houses over a two-and-half-year period.
