Obama announces ‘Change the Equation’ program on science and math education

Washington, D.C. – On Thursday, President Obama announced from the Eisenhower Building in Washington, D.C. the creation of a new educational organization, Change the Equation, which will be focused upon the promotion of math and science education in America’s schools. The organization, which will be governed by business leaders within the private sector, will work over the next year to create new and innovative programs in science and math for the purpose of helping the United States to become the world leader in those fields of expertise in the 21st century.

In his address to business leaders, the president admitted that such an initiative does not have the “conflict and controversy” to receive a high amount of media attention. However, he stated, “10 years from now, 20 years from now, we’re going to look back and say this is something that made a difference,” adding, “It doesn’t get a lot of fanfare, but from the bottom up, it’s making a huge difference in our country.”

In addition to the teachers, students, and business leaders, and members of Congress in attendance, also attending the event were Obama’s science and technology advisor John Holdren, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, astronauts Sally Ride and Mae Jemison, and the planned chief executive officer of Change the Equation, Linda Rosen.
