After thirteen months of contentious debate in Washington and town halls across America, the health care vote is less than 24 hours away.
The historic vote will be a defining moment for the Obama Presidency and the nation. If passed, it will be the most sweeping domestic legislation since the passage of Medicare in 1965. It too was called socialized medicine by the opposition, and yet has proved to be a tremendous benefit for millions of Americans. Passage of the Health Care Bill will provide millions of uninsured Americans with pre-existing conditions access to health insurance coverage. Uninsured young people will have extended coverage under their parent's insurance plan until age twenty-six, small businesses will receive tax credits to assist with providing their workers medical insurance. Additionally, an appeal process will be established for individuals who believe they have been wrongly denied treatment, and insurance companies will be prohibited from imposing life-time limits on payouts.
President Obama's poll numbers have declined over the pass year, partly because of his unwavering commitment to reform health care. During the 2008 Presidential Campaign, some of Senator Obama's opponents questioned whether he had the "metal" to take on the "big issues" if elected President.
If the past year's polarizing debated over health care reform is any indication of the magnitude of this issue, then President Obama has shown that he has the "metal" to take on the "big issues."
