Anti-Abortion Bill Passes the House

A health care bill with an anti-abortion amendment has passed the House in Florida.  The Bill would require an ultrasound for women who want to get an abortion in their first trimester.  The women would have to pay for it themselves as well as look at the live image, unless they can prove they were victims of rape, incest, domestic violence, human trafficking or a serious condition.

The House passed the Bill on  a 76-44 vote after hours of emotionally charged debate.  Democrats said it was little more than an attempt to persuade women they shouldn't have an abortion.  Rhetoric and emotion both overflowed during the debate that included testimony from three members who discussed personal encounters with decisions about abortion.

The estimated costs of such procedures would be between $750 and $1500, depending on location and status of pregnancy.  Less than 10 percent of abortions in Florida occur after the first trimester and ultrasounds are already required for abortions after the first trimester.

"A decision to terminate a pregnancy should be a private decision a woman's allowed to make," CEO of Planned Parenthood of North Florida said.  "Were taking away the right for a medical doctor to make a decision of what's necessary in any given procedure."  The amendment not only undermines the freedoms of women and their doctors, but it also imposes the high cost of an ultrasound on those who may not be able to afford it.

Democrats shut down the House Thursday because of the last minute piece of pro-life legislation in the final days of the regular session.  The Bill never got a committee hearing or a public debate in the Senate.  Governor Charlie Crist, consumed enough already in his own political drama, will have the final decision .  Spokesman for Crist, Sterling Ivey said,"He has some concern with the Bill, he wants to review it when it reaches his desk".

The Bill also included a provision supporting Attorney General Bill McCollum's lawsuit against the Federal Government that alleges national health care reforms for the American people are unconstitutional.
