The plug has been pulled on Energy 92.7, San Francisco's gay radio station. Why was the staff fired?

There’s a big rumor going around today (9/10/09) that the new owner of Energy 92.7 is very homophobic and he fired a lot of the employees at the radio station. Ed Stolz (former owner of KWOD in Sacramento, and current owner of 2 stations in Vegas) purchased Energy for $6.5 million. Energy’s facebook fanpage has been leaving comments to keep people updated. Below are some of the comments from the page:

Energy 92.7 FM Tune into Energy 92.7 right now until 3pm...on the dial or Channel 964 on Comcast

Today is a sad sad day. Energy was the only station that dared to recognize the gay population in San Francisco and had no apologies about it. I woke up this morning not to dance music and Fernando and Greg, but to Linkin Park and rap that does not make me want to dance. There are no words for the mixture of sadness and anger that I am feeling right now.

I don't understand why it has to about "homophobia". It's about economics...the station was bought 5 years ago for $30 Million bucks....sold for $6.5 Million. The bottom fell out of the major market out of home electronic media spending. Look on the bright side it's still privately held and may spend it's budget locally.
Unlike the "Clear Channel" and "CBS" make out money in the big markets and give a sliver it back to the shareholders.

I listened after reading this posting and it's really not that bad...I like the variety, not just one 118 BPM track after another. I do hope that those whose employment is effected find new jobs soon. It not about sexuality, it's about lifestyle, live your life with style.

The music of REV 92.7 is no different than what you here on so many other Bay Area radio stations from Wild 94.9 to Star 101 and so on. Where is the dance music on the air now? No where.

92.7 is a unique station - plays fun energy music with mixes you don't hear on the ohter hip hop obsessed popular stations in the Bay. Energy is a station that wakes me up happy in the am when I hear Greg & Fernando and helps get my "Energy" back up in the afternoon as well when trying to finish out my day of work. I love this station and have listened for years - I even got my husbady listening to it over the past couple of years - We love Energy and especially love Greg & Fernando.

Back to AM. No reason to turn on the radio except for traffiic. No smart radio left in the bay area. And they can't figure out why traditional media is dying. RIP Energy! And for you small minds I'm straight and this is a loss for all, a victory for none!

How is this a LGBT story? Was Energy 92.7 really a "gay radio station"? (I am gay and listened to 92.7 but so did a lot of straights.) Come on now Eric. What gives you the right to call someone a homophobe? That's an accusation that shouldn't be thrown around frivolously - much like the race card. The station had low ratings and its new owner has every right to change the format. I am sad to see Energy leave the airwaves but that's show biz.(Remember Party 92.7? another low rated failure.) Best of luck to Fernando and Greg. I am sure they'll be just fine.

If this turns out the be true, I'm going to maintain a list of station advertisers and the gay community should boycott every one of them. If it can hurt Glen Beck, it can certainly hurt Mr. Stolz.

This is the gay community's own fault. With the amount of rich gays out there you'd think they'd own their own station by now instead of being at the whims of str8ties. This is like the third time this station has come and gone and this was its gayest incarnation. Surely some rich gay could have bought that station. It's true that FM Radio is dying, but this was an important station. Now we nothing witty and smart left to listen to...

  • Lowell [Long Beach Populist Examiner] 2 years ago

LMDias is on point. What happened to the Black community after desegregation is happening to the LGBT "community:" when the doors and barriers to downtown opened up, Blacks ceased to patronize its own community and sought the prestige of others. The LGBT community Establishment has been more concerned with EQUALITY and no longer LIBERATION. So OUT magazine will make widgets out of us too. Hello, Clearchannel!

I have to admit that it was pretty shocking to hear NRG replaced by K-R-A-P; and it did feel like homophobia had to have played a role. But then I read some comments and learned that the station wasn't doing that well, which made me realize that other than Fernando and Greg, NRG was just about as suckulatory as this new incarnation seems to be. And I never listened except to their (F & G's) morning show. So the question is where do I find them now? Please don't tell me it will require a relocation to Austin, TX!

We feel your loss here in NYC.

That is why we have to continue to fight for more acceptance of dance music in terms of getting the exposure somehow. THIS MUSIC MUST BE ON THE RADIO! There is still something about terrestrial radio that matters.

For those of you that want to join my fight, join my coalition....New York Dance Music Coalition. We may have "New York" on the title, but this is about ALL dance fans, no matter where you live!

    www.myspace.com/nydanceradio
    www.facebook.com/nydancemusic

So don't feel upset or angry. Be proactive and lets get a station back in SF soon!

With all due respect to the music and most of the staff, I cant help but think that SF will be kinder and gentler place without a certain shallow and mean-spirited "sportscaster" on the air. But sadly I suspect he will pop up again somewhere else.

Frank: 92.7 will always do bad in the arbitrons because it has such a weak signal. Energy was selling tons of ads, and making decent money. What killed them is that the owners (Flying Bear) bought them for $35 mil at the peak of the market. They had to pay the mortgage on that, and there was no way then could. The new owners may do OK because they're paying only $6.5 mil for it, and they're not going to locally program it (it's being programmed by Josh Fleming out of Palm Desert, like their Las Vegas station).

Another milestone in the demise of terrestrial broadcasting.

  • Rusty 2 years ago

If Royce Broadcasting (the new owners of 92.7) was smart, they would have kept the staff, and put the format on their 97.7 station in Palm Springs. There is a huge San Francisco / Palm Springs crossover - the joint programming and promotion possibilities are endless. Instead we get the same old narrow-minded corporate broadcast thinking.

The station sucked and got bought out by a successful man who happens to dislike gays. Im pretty sure thats his right. Maybe if you flamers quit crying and holding rally's and actually did something you could still have your awful station

Fernando, Greg {the Gay Sports Caster - "If they're playing with balls, I'm ALL over it!} and Jason, who was just starting to show his bi-sexual side. I hope you all find another local station for your morning show, afternoon programming, evening programming, early morning programming. I thought the guy that started this station wanted dance, dance, dance & fun. How could he sell out?! Or did he?? I love you guys. Especially Greg with the stories of Texas, his family, his Mother... made me almost pee in my pants on the way to work talking about his family. God Bless you guys. Hope we can tune in to whatever new station, wherever you land. Man am I bummed!

Anyone know if the DJs (or anyone) are selling CDs with some of those great cuts: Imagination, Disturbia, Devil on My Shoulder, Feel Your Love, If You Knew, Fire, I Did It for Love, The Longest Road, I Remember, Sensual, Don't Call Me Baby, etc. ? I have a long list.

Keith, the only thing more embarrassing than calling out a 'mo is getting your arse kicked by one so watch your tone. I guarantee you I not only work harder than you but make more in a day than you do in a year so keep your ignorant generalizations behind that piece of sht you call a mouh. Also, are you serious with your grammar? What are you like in the 3rd grade???
And as far as the station owner is concerned, if he were truly "successful" as you point out he'd rea
lize that the disposable income of the gays is higher than any other group in america and he would have capitalized on that instead of bringing his politics to his job...but he IS from sacto so what can we really expect.

Lastly, did you know that the name Keith was actually proven to belong to the least unattractive males, so it's not without irony that you poke fun at guys who suck dk knowing full well they wouldn't touch yours with a 10 foot pole after twelve midori sours!?!?!
