Gay rights activists crashed NY state senator Hiram Monserrate's Christmas party in Queens on Tuesday, in protest of his anti-gay marriage stance earlier this month.
Wrapped up in Christmas cheer- Monserrate seemed to have forgotten that Tuesday was the one year anniversary of his arrest for slashing his girlfriend's face with a broken bottle, beating her up, and dragging her through his apartment lobby. Members of the gay rights group The Power however, did remember, and payed the senator a visit. Referencing his assault trial and anger over broken promises to the gay community, one activist screamed, "It's the one-year anniversary of Hiram slashing his girlfriend! Hiram's a wife beater! He can get married and we can't!"
Monserrate was convicted of a single count of misdemeanor assault early this month, though he was initially charged with two felony counts and two misdemeanor counts of assault after cutting his girlfriend Karla Giraldo’s face during an argument in his apartment in December of 2008. The lesser sentence was given to the senator largely because Ms. Giraldo testified that the attack was unintentional. Monserrate was handed down a sentence of three years of probation and 250 hours of community service, for recklessly causing physical injury to his companion. Monserrate and Giraldo plan to be married after the judge's protective order is lifted.
