The musical comedy duo, That’s What She Said made up of Amy Turner (vocalist) and Kathryn Lounsbery (pianist and vocalist) performed yet another brilliant show at the Stella Adler theatre, presented by the Los Angeles Women's Theatre Project last night.
The pair delivered a fast-paced, imaginative, satirically inspired send up to all things lesbian. From the moment they walked on stage clad in white blazers bedazzled in rainbow sequins the audience was hooked.
They opened with The Lesbian Cliché Song. Clearly a crowd favorite, the disco inspired tune covered every stereotype imaginable, from fashion (or lack thereof) to women in sports. The rest of the set was made up of quick-fire one-liners perfectly placed amidst hilarious songs such as Fanny Pack Lover, which illustrates the MacGyver like qualities of one woman’s fashion accessory to First Date, which examines the perils of online dating in the style of a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. They also performed a couple of serious songs, Why is My Right Wrong (a response to Prop 8) and Drink Her In, a love song. The evening ended with uproariously funny U-Haul Rap, which answers the age- old question, what does a lesbian bring on the second date?
What makes this show so exceptional beside sheer talent is Amy and Kathryn’s on stage chemistry. It is infectious. The crowd cannot help but be drawn in whether gay or straight. Amy’s vocal ability in every genre from jazz, disco, rap and power ballads is perfectly matched by Kathryn’s masterful keyboard and harmonies.
So strap on your fanny pack and slip into your comfortable shoes and get yourself down to the Stella Adler Theatre to catch their last show on July 16.
