Two Michigan attorneys have been selected to receive the 2009 Frank J. Kelley Distinguished Public Service Award.
Attorney Dennis P. Grenkowicz spent 16 years as Alpena County’s prosecuting attorney. He helped change the state’s search and seizure law and the state’s criminal procedure, requiring the defense to disclose its evidence prior to trial just as the prosecution is required to do. He worked with legislators in 2004 to develop a statute giving vulnerable adults the same protections from abuse that children have under the law.
Attorney Lloyd E. Powell has been the chief public defender in Washtenaw County for 29 years. He conducts a public forum, “Enhancing Police and Community Trust,” in conjunction with the Washtenaw County Bar Association’s Annual Bias Awareness Week. Powell and his office are part of the Judicial Oversight Demonstration Project, which works on domestic violence cases. He also works closely with mental health providers and helped create a plan to provide services to mentally ill inmates in the Washtenaw County jail.
The Frank J. Kelley Distinguished Public Service Award recognizes extraordinary governmental service by a member of the State Bar of Michigan. Criteria for the award are:
• A present or former member of the State Bar of Michigan;
• Past or current service in the public sector in a way that strengthens American system of justice under the law;
• Demonstration of the highest standards of integrity, fairness, excellence, dedication to principle, and dedication to the ideals democracy; and
• Has made a significant lasting contribution to the nation, the state, or the community in which the public servant lives or serves.
The awards will be presented at the State Bar of Michigan Annual Meeting Awards Banquet at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn on Wednesday, September 16, 2009, 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
