A Macomb County chiropractor has entered a guilty plea to one count of willful failure to file an income tax return for 2001, the Departments of Justice and Treasury reported Wednesday. U.S. Attorney Barbara L. McQuade and IRS CID Special Agent in Charge Maurice Aouate announced the plea.
Court records show that Glenn Ahee, 48, owned and operated Shorepointe Chiropractic. Records further show that, in 1991, Ahee created Shorepointe Chiropractic Trust, ran his business finances through the trust account, reported his own income as "outside services" expenses on behalf of the trust from 1991 through 2004, and regularly deposited or cashed his income checks through his wife's bank accounts. Further, during that time, Ahee stopped reporting any individual income from his chiropractic business to the IRS. The result was a tax due and owing of over $290,000.
Ahee also had a 1999 conviction for falsely declaring no income for the tax years 1990 and 1991. His sentence was 15 months in a community correction center.
"Most individuals file truthful tax returns voluntarily and pay their share of taxes," said Aouate. "IRS special agents are doing their job to ensure the honest individuals do not have to pick up the tab of those people not filing returns."
Willful failure to file an income tax return is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000. U.S. District Court Judge Bernard A. Friedman will sentence Ahee on Jan. 25, 2011.
